About the Design

Glass, steel and four different kinds of stone was all it took for Mies to create a building that had such an impact in the field of architecture, that even 50 years after it was dismantled, the city of Barcelona decided to rebuild it and open it to the public.

Even today, the German Pavilion designed by Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich looks as modern as if it had just been designed. The design is probably as timeless as an architectural structure can get, and therefore is still extensively studied and used as a referent.

It was in the Barcelona Pavilion where Mies first tried out his signature cruciform pillars, and also where he and Lilly unveiled the iconic Barcelona chair, which is still manufactured and sold today.
