Guggenheim NYC. Ceramic Mug
About the Design
In a letter to Frank Lloyd Wright sent on June 1943, Hilla Rebay, director of the Guggenheim foundation, asked the architect to take on the challenge of designing the first Guggenheim museum. In her letter she told wright “I need a fighter, a lover of space,” … “an originator, a tester, and a wise man.” … “I want a temple of spirit, a monument.” … “The building should be unlike any other museum in the world.”.
Those passionate words seem to have been enough to motivate Wright, by then well into his career and internationally renown, to take on a project he might have otherwise not found very appealing, as he was openly critic of modern cities and abstract art.
Whatever the reasons might have been that made Wright embark in a tortuous 16 year journey between the time he designed the building until it was inaugurated, the Guggenheim foundation, the City of New York and any architecture lover, have reason to be grateful, as the result was nothing less than the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, one of the most recognizable buildings in the world.
